Starting position

A scrum pinned against the right-hand edge of the field, eight metres of channel on one side and everything else on the other. The 9 picks at the base and sets the backline going down the open side. The ball goes to the 10, to the 12, then to the fullback stepping into the line, and with every pair of hands the defence slides one notch further. What they do not see is the blindside wing: he left his edge the moment the ball came out and has travelled the whole width behind his forwards to arrive at the end of the line exactly when the ball does. He takes it with a man to spare, feeds his left wing down the touchline, and the try goes down in the corner — fifty-eight metres from where the scrum was fed.
