Two Threats, One Shoulder

Starting position

Two tacklers with shields, two attackers on the white cones. Both attackers come forward together, side by side. Then one stops dead on his cone and the other keeps going. The tackler has to make the call — and he has to make it late, because nothing tells him in advance which one will carry. That is exactly the match situation: two threats in front of you and a pass that leaves at the last second. Hips don't lie, but they try to. You read the hips, not the shoulders and not the ball, and you pick your side. Right shoulder, right choice, tackle sticks. Wrong shoulder and you are beaten on the inside without having touched anybody. Double contact, and above all brain work under pressure.
